Challenges in Bladder Cancer Report Oct 2017
A recommendations report from the Bladder Cancer Expert Roundtable held in May 2017 - experts included patients, clinicians and clinical nursing specialists. ABC UK was a key member of this roundtable.Bladder cancer has long been under-prioritised andoverlooked relative to the impact it has on patients. A wide range ofchallenges face those with the disease, including delayed diagnosis, a lack ofawareness of symptoms among GPs and a protracted and complex pathway forpatients to navigate. This report explores these issues, and puts forward anumber of recommendations for how to address some of these concerns.
The Need for a UK National Bladder Cancer Audit
WE NEED A NATIONAL BLADDER CANCER AUDIT
A national audit collects information about care pathways and cancer treatment outcomes and addresses regional variation.
- 21,185 people in the UK are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year
- More than 50% of people have never heard of bladder cancer before their diagnosis
- More than 49% of patients receive insufficient information when diagnosed
If we collect better data about bladder cancer, we can improve the lives of thousands of people.
- National cancer audits make real improvements to patient outcomes
- National cancer audits identify and reduce over-treatment and under-treatment
APPGC Report Dec 2017 'Progress of the England Cancer Strategy: Delivering outcomes by 2020?’
05 Dec 2017 - the APPCG (All PartyParliamentary Group on Cancer) new report 'Progress of the England Cancer Strategy: Delivering outcomes by 2020?'
This report comes at the half-way stage of implementation of the England Cancer Strategy, and received extensive evidence from across the NHS and sector, including over 80 written submission and two oral evidence sessions, including a submission from Action Bladder Cancer UK. The report concludes that the Cancer Strategy risks failure unless NHS England takes corrective action. The report also highlights:
Challenges facing the cancer workforce pose a significant threat to the success of the Cancer Strategy.
- Significant delays in a strategic review of the cancer workforce, which underpins the success of the strategy.
- Concern around the delays in the release of transformation funding for Cancer Alliances as well as the requirements to demonstrate an improvement in the 62-day wait standard as a prerequisite to access their transformation funding.
- There should be an increased focus on improving transparency and lines of communication.
